Hello!

Welcome to "SHRM Beyond COVID" my blog on how the post-Covid world has impacted Strategic Human Resources Management.

Over the course of several blog posts, I hope to look into the way SHRM has evolved since the pandemic. Covid-19 was a watershed moment for humanity, impacting the way we lived our lives in ways that few global incidents have across history, there will always be a "Before Covid" and an "After Covid" and that is why I chose it as the theme of this blog.

We will be looking at integral parts of SHRM such as Managing teams, employee motivation, managing change, talent management, and recruitment, and how they have been adapted & molded in a Post pandemic world.

Strategic human resource management can be defined as the process of managing people in a way that optimizes the business’s goals and objectives. (Workhuman editorial Team, 2022)

Why is SHRM important?  Because by aligning HR programs and policies with a company’s business strategy, SHRM can help businesses improve employee performance, develop the workforce and create a positive work environment. SHRM can also help businesses save money by reducing turnover and improving productivity (Haan, 2023)

Traditional Vs Strategic Human Resource Management

How has SHRM evolved post Covid? Because the pandemic has re-emphasized the “human” element in human resources. Although HR managers still need to oversee productivity and performance, the pandemic has made it clear that understanding, empathizing with employees, and investing in their well-being are equally important to maintain a positive efficiency in organisations. (Bhaila, 2022)

  1. The development of SHRM in the post-COVID era is a crucial subject that needs to be carefully examined, considering today's evolving business landscape. As rightly highlighted by Nithila, HR procedures have changed considerably in recent times to accommodate employers and workers demands. Businesses can attain their goals and objectives while fostering a happy work environment by modifying HR processes, including employee engagement, to create a win-win situation for both parties.

    1. Thank you for your comment Hashmath, absolutely! the world has changed a lot over the last couple of years, changes that have been small and incremental for decades have been exacerbated by the pandemic and organisations are having to rethink their relationship with employees in ways that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. The "win-win situation" you alluded to is now well ingrained in to SHRM and how modern HR managers have to think.

    1. Hi Hadhil, Thank you for your comment! That's actually a great question, Bhateja (2021) argues that post-pandemic “HR has cemented its position as the right hand of the CEO, helping navigate complex people-centric challenges" and I tend to agree, employees are far more aware of concepts like work-life balance, well-being and an organisations leadership requires the input of HR professionals now more than ever.

SHRM by definition is the alignment of strategic business goals of the organization with human resources (Sampras, 2020) therefore as business goals adapt to the post pandemic world so too must SHRM!

      Best Regards, Nithila

  3. Hi Nithila, excellent topic selection for your blog. In my view, organizations should be quick to adapt and evolve in the post-COVID world. From a human resource management perspective, it is crucial for companies to prioritize employee well-being and stay attuned to the changing needs of the workforce. This involves not only embracing new technologies but also rethinking traditional ways of working to accommodate the changing work environment. As highlighted in a recent article in the Harvard Business Review, 'companies that are digitally mature, agile, and purpose-driven will have a significant competitive advantage in the years ahead' (Westerman et al., 2022). Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to prioritize their digital maturity and agility while remaining focused on their purpose-driven goals to ensure they have a competitive edge in the evolving market.

    1. Hi Praveen, Thank you for your comment, absolutely, I think hit the nail on the head, organisations are in an "adapt or die" situation, and any leaders who think they can still run in the "business as usual" way will find themselves facing severe backlash.

Also, even topics that were once considered taboo or may make employees feel vulnerable to bring up in the workplace such as mental health have been brought into the spotlight post-Covid, as Arnold (2023) notes Mental health is a critical component of overall health and well-being, organisations are making available other resources like financial counseling and legal advice to employees as well.

      Best Regards, Nithila
